Wybitulová, Berenika ; Šmidrkal, Václav (advisor) ; Kunštát, Miroslav (referee)
This bachelor thesis explores the Anschluss of Austria and its media image in selected Czech and German periodicals of First Czechoslovak Republic. The aim of the thesis is to present the narratives that shaped the news coverage of this historical event, and at the same time to show the influence of state-controlled mechanisms on the form of news about the Anschluss. The first chapter of the thesis introduces the media landscape of the First Republic, consideringthe connection of the Czechoslovak News Agency (ČTK) to state authorities or censorship measures during this period. In particular,it focuses on the phenomenon of party and non-party newspapers, as it is party and non-party periodicals across the political spectrum that are analysed in the second chapter of the thesis. In this section, the circumstances of the Anschluss are first briefly described, then the thesis analyses the impact of this situation on Czechoslovakia's international position and diplomatic relations. The analysis itself relies on archival findings that document the communication between the ČTK and state institutions during March 1938, and uses these findings to evaluate the content and wording of the articles in the various periodicals. Most of the periodicals agree that Czechoslovakia was not in danger after the Anschluss...
The First Apostolic Nuncio in Prague Clemente Micara and his Reflection in the Contemporary Czech Press in the Years 1920-1923
Řeháček, Tomáš ; Šmíd, Marek (advisor) ; Petráček, Tomáš (referee)
In the newly formed Czechoslovak Republic, the Catholic Church lost the position it had in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. It was necessary to change almost the entire Church structure, replace the majority of the bishopric, establish new church schools and find a new way of coexistence of church and state. A papal nunciature was established in Prague and an embassy of the Czechoslovak Republic was established in Rome. The first Vatican nuncio, Clemente Micara, was sent to Prague, where he worked there for less than four years. His task was to carry out the necessary changes pro- posed by the Vatican to strengthen the position of the Catholic Church in Czechoslovakia, and his mission was successful.
The coexistence of Czechs and Germans in South Bohemia during the interwar period
KALMA, Pavel
This thesis deals with a topic that predates the controversial events of the expulsion of the Sudeten Germans. It is one of the chapters of Czech-German coexistence, which influenced and co-shaped the development in the Czech and Moravian lands for a long time. The topic chosen for this work is the coexistence of Czechs and Germans during the period of the Czechoslovak First Republic, which was strongly influenced by the Munich Agreement in the autumn of 1938. In my thesis I focused on the initial and final stages of the newly established state. The attitude of Germans living in the Czech lands towards the new Czechoslovak state and its very creation was examined, as well as the attitude of Czech society towards the German minority, which in the early days tended to refuse to participate in the state under Czech rule. In my work I have tried to summarize at least some of the conditions of the coexistence under study and its historical development, as well as the events of the last pre-war years, especially the dramatic year 1938, which ended with the withdrawal of the German-occupied borderlands.
Sušice, the Gate of Šumava Mountains. Development and Promotion of Tourism in the Region of Sušice in years 1918-1938
NOVÁ, Lucie
This thesis deals with the topic of development and promotion of tourism in the region of Sušice in years 1918 - 1938. It expands the field of research of the author´s bachelor thesis Activities of the Club of Czech Tourist in years 1890 - 1914. Firstly, three big building projects of the Club are observed: construction of Klostermann´s chalet in Modrava and chalet in Prášily, as well as the re-erection of Svatobor´s view tower. The following part focuses on the development of the possibilities of transport in the region: trains, regular and occasional tourist buses and cars. Marked tourist paths for walking are also considered. Later it´s examined whether the centre of the region - the town Sušice - conforms to the typical depiction of a summer resort. Main steps making the locality more attractive for tourists are explored. The changes in numbers of visitors in Sušice from the second half of 1920s are outlined. In the next part the author analyses the vacationers from the summer 1930 in social and vocational terms. The last part compares guidebooks and other promotional materials and based on them enquires, whether the presentation of town Sušice in the interwar period diverges from the end of the 19th century. The topic of nationalism is omnipresent in the whole thesis.
The Life and Criminalization of Czech Queer Women in the first half of the 20th Century
Zdráhalová, Judita ; Petráček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Šmíd, Marek (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the everyday life and persecution of Czech non-heterosexual women in the first half of the 20th century. It therefore examines the status and overall situation of homosexual minorities in the society, primarily in the years 1918-1945, ie during the Czech First Republic and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, with a focus on women. The thesis doesn't cover the period before the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic, due to limited sources and the absence of research. Apart from the historical context and the description of the perception of lesbian love at that time, the thesis will present selected queer publications, associations, favorite meeting places or restaurants and important female figures of this community in the given period. The second part of the thesis will then be carried out as a case study of criminal records concerning women accused of the crime of "fornication against nature", which can help us gain insight into the mentality and everyday life of lesbian women of the first half of the 20th century.

Přibyl, Michal ; Šmíd, Marek (advisor) ; Petráček, Tomáš (referee)
Relationship of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia to catholic church in the period of the First Czechoslovak Republic The bachelor thesis analyzes the relationship of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia to religion and churches in the period of the First Czechoslovak Republic. It is based on an analysis of the contemporary party press through which the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia disseminated its views and informed the Czechoslovak public about its political actions. In particular, the author seeks to establish whether the persecution of the Church that occurred after the Communist Party seized full power in 1948 could have been predicted. At the same time, the author aims to discern whether the views and attitudes of the Communist Party towards religion evolved and changed during the interwar period. Conciliation extra-parliamentary bodies of the first Czechoslovak Republic
Marečková, Adéla ; Šušlíková, Lada (advisor) ; Adler, Tomáš (referee)
My bachelor's thesis "Conciliation extra-parliamentary bodies of the first Czechoslovak Republic" focuses on informal groups that emerged during the first Czechoslovak Republic from 1918 to 1938. These extra-parliamentary bodies had mainly stabilization character and helped to achieve consensus across political parties. The first was "the Five", group of leaders of five major political parties. "The Five" existed from 1921 to 1925 when the first government of Antonín Švehla collapsed. The second one was the Castle Group that formed around president T. G. Masaryk and Edvard Beneš. The Castle Group supporters were certain politicians, intellectuals and journalists. The Castle Group was closer to socialist parties, while "the Five" to civil parties. The Tradesmen's bank group, which operated in the economic sector, was quite similar to the named power centres. Its main representative was a banker Jaroslav Preiss. Despite their not very democratic character "the Five" and the Castle Group helped to sustain democracy in the first Czechoslovak Republic.

Roubík, Michal ; Jakubec, Ivan (advisor) ; Sejk, Michal (referee)
In my diploma thesis "The Development of Urban Build-up Area and Urban Infrastructure in Benešov in the Years 1918 - 1939", I explore one chapter in the development of a small agricultural town during the era of the First Czechoslovak Republic. This thesis is a contribution to the history of Czech towns during the interwar period and its topic corresponds to the research project of the Institute of Economic and Social History at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, within the frame of which I worked on this thesis. The thesis was written mainly based on research of the resources in the State District Archives in Benešov (a branch office of the State Regional Archives in Prague) and of a wide range of relevant specialized literature. The introduction consists of a chapter offering a complex summary of the most important moments and changes in the development of Benešov during the examined period. Apart from the history of Benešov, it also shows the role of the town in the region and the relation of its development to other municipalities in the country. The focal point of the thesis lays in the extensive yet lucid chapters examining architectural development of the town (the essential moments, context, but also particular interesting buildings) and the development of its infrastructure...

Moučková, Kristýna ; Slanec, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Čeňková, Jana (referee)
Diploma thesis Graphic design of Czech interwar avant-garde magazines and its creators deals with yet not very well covered topic of analysation of visual form of First Czechoslovak Republic cultural magazines that contains some of the avant-garde methods in its graphics. This thesis in its theoretical part relies on foreign influences, mainly on Russian constructivism, Dutch De Stijl artistic movement and German school of Bauhaus that played major part in shaping of the Czech avant-garde. With regard to the main topic of the text the emphasis is on specifics of graphic magazine creation and design, specifically on the works of Karel Teige, Ladislav Sutnar and František Muzika. The practical part of the thesis is then dedicated to three avant-garde magazine analyses. Journals ReD, Žijeme and HOST represent three different approaches of how the creators were able to work all avant-garde elements in the graphic form of the periodicals. In the analysis the attention is paid mainly on the front pages, composition, fonts, image components, other graphic elements that make up the whole visual aspect of every page and graphic form of advertising. In the end all three magazines are compared with one another to provide at least elementary overview of avant-garde graphic methods used in Czech magazines in...

The thesis focuses on whether the film periodicals changed the way they reflected German cinematography during the period of escalating Nazi aggression towards Czechoslovakia and especially in the situation after the acceptance of Munich Agreement.
